Theses watches from designer Yvan Arpa are not only beautiful time pieces but are also made from the remains of the titanic. Apparently coal had been burned in the Titanic’s furnaces prior to its sinking and has been recovered and mixed with ceramics to create the black dials of the watches. A Swiss jeweler will be making the watches and they are going to be sold under the name “Titanic-DNA” and will be extremely rare as a limited run of only 2,012 will be produced. The watches will vary in price from $9,000 to $150,00 depending on your choice of silver, gold and/or diamonds customized on the watches. [via]

This latest design from Philippe Stark is this Veiled watch ($247). Its electroplated crystal looks like the band, making it look like a stainless steel bracelet. A closer look reviles the watches hands. The design is available for men and women, the women version being narrower.

The Joaillerie 101 Manchette is this amazing little watch from Jaeger-LeCoultre is made of a series of polished and diamond-set squares. The combination of the squares make this look more like a bracelet than a watch, however one of the squares is the watch. The Joaillerie 101 Manchette has a silver-colored dial with a sapphire crystal, and uses the mechanical manually wound Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 101 movement. The watch is available set with 576 diamonds or with 400 diamonds and 11 onyx cabochons.

Basel World 2007 keeps surprising us with exquisite watches. One of the most extraordinary of them coming from Bulgari. The 48mm platinum-cased Tourbillon Multicomplication Squelette was made in limited edition set of only 20 . This $150,000 watch features a perpetual calendar, and has double sapphire crystals. The watch uses an automatic in-house Caliber BVL 416 with 64 hours of power reserve.

The Only Watch event is coming again September 20th in Monaco. The Only Watch event is held yearly for watchmakers to design unique pieces that will eventually be auctioned off to benefit research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy. With that being said, some of the most unique watches are showcased. One watch that stood out from the rest was a masterpiece produced by Girard-Perregaux. “Unlike any other in the world, this is the first watch to combine perpetual calendar, the indication of time in 24 different international cities as well as the business hours of four major stock markets. The dial displays the date, the day of the week, the month and the moon phase. The mechanism takes into account the length of each month, allowing for the leap years without any manual adjustment before 2100. Two mobile rings on the dial show the opening hours of the New York, London, Hong Kong and Tokyo and the different times around the world”. Ideally this would be perfect for the international traveller, yet, I could still see many others finding this extremely fascinating.

About this time last year at Baselworld 2006, the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève prize for electronic watches was awarded to Seiko for their breakthrough in electronic ink technology. Their watch featured a thin-yet-easy to read e-ink display all around the watch. This year they one-upped themselves with a new e-ink watch-style bracelet for females that features emotional technology. The new bracelet has different modes depending the wearers mood and what they are doing. There is an “Efficiency” mode which “the display is informative and easy to read”. There is also a “Mystery” mode where “the panel expresses the time in a more imaginative, evocative style”. There is no word on pricing, production, nor availability right now, but I hope to see these in stores sometime soon.
UPDATE: There are only 5 of these watches made. Production of these watches might be around fall 2007.
