...but thats not so bad.

And that’s not such a bad thing. The Pandora (official site – Written about previously here) is an open source gaming beast. The ship date has been moved back several times, most recently because LCD’s have taken too long to be produced and bank problems with the orders. Things are slowly coming together.

As the dev team works hard. the release date nears as software is produced and perfected. The dev team is an individual team of normal guys, with an exceptional intelligence. They all have experience with things, but nothing with this magnitude. The original plan was to produce 3000, although this was upped to 4000, and you could only get one by preorder. They expect to have 200-300 extra so you MIGHT be able to snag one without a preorder.

Selling 2000 Pandora’s in the first 6 hours, so much traffic on the sites that were selling them they were slowing due to load. Second batch of Pandora’s is expected to be run in 2009, although they have yet to get the first batch shipped. When the Pandora finally gets here we will have a special hands on review, so check back often. This will not happen until the device gets here, but in the mean time feel free to watch the attached video demonstrating Pandora’s custom OS.

The tale of this machine is a long one, first the preorder date got moved back a few times, the preorders finally opened. August 14th, 2008 the “final” design had its pictures posted here. On October 30th the developers decided, due to the bank problems they would make it up to us, and with the decrease in the price of the RAM and NAND, they decided to double both. Now it has 256 MB of RAM and 512 MB of NAND — DOUBLE that of the previous design. for comparison the PSP-1000 had 32 MB main memory, and the PSP-3000 with 64 MB still gets no where near the 256 MB found in the Pandora, that’s four times as much as the PSP-3000, and not only does that beat the PSP with RAM, but it has dedicated 3D hardware.

The people who need their litle gadgets, internet over your phone – even a USB mouse – it is only limited by the Linux driver availability for the device, which is actually very good despite what everyone thinks. An abundance of storage, 64 GB max, because of the dual SDHC card slots. That would be basically two 32 GB SSD’s. Although depending on how strictly it adheres to the SDHC specifications, in time it could support up to 2048 GB on each card. ( source ) 2 TB in a card. Two cards means an abundance of storage, in the future of course. And don’t forget the good thing about open source, you can change it. If the Pandora comes with explicit support for the SDHC standard, someone is bound to change that.

More will be written about this when more news surfaces.

Mean while check out this video (youtube, H.264 and XviD) demonstrating Pandora’s OS

Recently they posted the expected shipping dates and such, these now seem much more reasonable. (Which is unlike the first – which was very hopeful. Although the most recent before this one seemed doable, but then some stuff happened. We’ll see how it goes.) So here is their plan:

Case Design: January 15th

Case Prototyping: approx. 1-2 weeks later

Final production and delivery: approx. 2 – 4 weeks later

That places it late February. You can expect more from us, and hopefully more from the dev team.

I can’t wait to open my box, and write a review. It will be a great upgrade to my gp2x F-200, which broke so i had to take out the touch screen and take out many pieces of the case. Let alone the specs! In case you don’t want to find them for yourself, here they are:

ARM® Cortex™-A8 600Mhz+ CPU running Linux

430-MHz TMS320C64x+™ DSP Core

PowerVR SGX OpenGL 2.0 ES compliant 3D hardware

800×480 4.3″ 16.7 million colours touchscreen LCD

Wifi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth & High Speed USB 2.0 Host

Dual SDHC card slots & SVideo TV output

Dual Analogue and Digital gaming controls

43 button QWERTY and numeric keypad

Around 10+ Hours battery life

I could not go on to mention the people behind this wondrous beast, and not feel bad about it. So major thanks to the following for all your hard work, and dedication to the community around this project.

Dev team, in no specific order:

Craigix

EvilDragon

mfk

MWeston

GamePark Holdings has stopped selling GP2x units. Coming to replace it is this unit, Pandora (not made by GPH). Supposedly going to be released to the public in August for $330 US dollars. (and in other countries, for varying price.) Already there are dev units available, but you have to be able to produce something that they would want you to make. The specs are A LOT better than the GP2x was, even when it was overclocked, also better than the PSP.

Not too much information about the actual OS is known but from the screen shots it seems that there will be several new ways of communicating with mobile devices such as Multi-touch (think iphone), options for shaking and rotating the device and even camera-based gesture based recognition. Since this is not a official Microsoft press release everything is speculation but looking at the screeshots provided they look pretty legit

Sometimes a concept comes along and its such a fantastic idea you wonder “why the hell didn’t I think of this??” Introducing the Napkin PC Concept by designer Avery Holleman. The Napkin PC is designed to be used in a business environment to help groups collaborate on various designs or documents simultaneously. Data is sent to the multi-touch e-paper via the pen by RF and has the ability to communicate to all the various tablets. Unfortunately this is only a concept so we probably will never see an actual production unit, but it is nice to see that designers are finally starting to think outside the box for PC designs.

This Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC)-like device features a 4.8-inch touch screen, full QWERTY keyboard, your choice of a 30GB/60GB hard drive, WiFi, DMB-TV tuner, SD expansion slot, and Windows CE 5.0 Pro. Based on previous Korean gadgets we most likely will not see this ever come to the United States, however we do get awesome UMPCs like the OQO:02. The price is unknown but my guess is that it will cost around $1,000 USD. [via].

Lately we have seen a new segment in portable computing starting to emerge. VIA introduced the NanoBook Ultra Mobile Device, Palm introduced the Foleo and several other companies are also planning to release smaller more portable designs as well. Well this new concept is by far the best design for a small UMPC / PDA type computer that I have ever seen. The new concept is called the Compenion and was designed by Felix Schmidberger. Since this is a concept there are no spec’s but the laptop does make uses a pair of sliding OLED touch screens. However the really cool part is the second OLED touchscreen underneath, which allows you can have a keyboard or anything of you choice to be displayed, basically its dual monitor laptop. In addition there is a a laser projector embedded in the bottom side and in conjunction with a home station they allow you to project images or movies onto the wall while using the pen as a remote controlPhotos –

This beautiful laptop is a prototype developed by Intel dubbed the Metro. It is the worlds thinnest laptop 0.7 inches thick and weighing 2.2lbs, however is not for sale. It travels with Intel to various trade shows to show developers what can be done with todays technology. This laptop has two displays; the main one is a LED-backlit LCD, and the outer display is made from e-ink and can be used to view your email, calendar, and other information even when the laptop’s off. Hopefully more laptops like this actually come to production.

Well just the other day Palm announced the interesting Foleo ultra-portable laptop and now it seems that other company’s are starting to unveil more laptops based on this new style of computing. Today VIA introduced the NanoBook Ultra Mobile Device and to be honest this editor was excited to use Palm’s new Foleo but now i cant wait to get my hands on one of VIA’s new Ultra Mobile Device. The NanoBook simply adds a significant amount of hardware to the device and allows for a much broader range of uses as opposed to the Foleo’s strictly business approach. The NanoBook runs on either Windows XP or Vista (I’ll believe it runs Vista when i see it), weighing in at just under two pounds it features a 1.2GHz VIA C7-M processor with up to 1GB of RAM Also included is a 30GB hard drive, 7-inch WVGA display, 802.11g WiFi , Bluetooth, and a DVI-out port and even comes in at a price of $600. Along side the 7-inch screen is a secondary slot to add the function of GPS, VoIP, or even WWAN which grealy increases the capabilities of this tiny laptop as opposed to the non-upgradeable Palm Foleo. Currently this is only a reference design but with Packard Bell and another unknown company already signed on, the prospects of bringing his incredibly versatile laptop to the US market seems to be fairly good.

VIA to Define Mobility 2.0 with Revolutionary New VIA NanoBook UMD Reference Design

Provides rich computing, Internet, and multimedia experience in a light, ultra portable notebook delivering up to five hours of battery life

Taipei, Taiwan, 05 June 2007 – VIA Technologies, Inc, a leading innovator and developer of silicon chip technologies and device platform solutions, will unveil the new VIA NanoBook UMD (Ultra Mobile Device) Reference Design at VTF2007 on 6 June 2007 in Taipei.

Designed to meet the needs of today’s Mobility 2.0 lifestyle, the VIA NanoBook packs the performance, connectivity and functionality of a notebook PC into a sleek and light ultra portable clamshell form factor that weighs less than 850g.

The VIA NanoBook is powered by the ultra low voltage 1.2GHz VIA C7-M processor and delivers up to 5 hours of battery life. Powered by a choice of Microsoft Windows XP or Windows Vista Basic operating systems, it comes with host of advanced features, including a full keyboard, a crisp 7″ WVGA screen with touch panel, up to 1GB DDR2 SDRAM, and a minimum 30GB HDD, as well as 802.11g WiFi, Bluetooth and Ethernet support, plus a DVI and two USB 2.0 ports.

To provide users with additional flexibility when they are on the move, the VIA NanoBook also features a USB slot next to the screen that will enable the snap-in integration of a variety of World Time Clock/Calendar, GPS, VOIP, and broadband wireless modules.

“The VIA NanoBook UMD Reference Design turns my dream of creating a full featured Ultra Mobile Device that delivers a rich computing, communications, and Internet computing experience into a reality,” said Wenchi Chen, President and CEO of VIA Technologies, Inc. “With its highly-functional yet ultra compact form factor and extended battery life, it will enable people to enjoy the Mobility 2.0 lifestyle at any place and any time.”

Recognized Manufacturing Quality

The VIA NanoBook UMD Reference Design has been designed and manufactured in collaboration with First International Computer, Inc (FIC), a world leader in the design and production of computing and other electronics devices, ensuring world class levels of quality and reliability, rapid time to market, and a flexible response to customer needs.

“The unrivaled portability and functionality of the VIA NanoBook makes small screen PDA devices seem hopelessly obsolete,” stated John Villejo, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for FIC. “Users searching beyond cumbersome laptops will also find familiarity with the ergonomics of the VIA NanoBook but with the added benefit of extreme mobility.”

With its innovative design, long battery life, and rich feature set, the VIA NanoBook UMD Reference Design has been adopted as the basis for the forthcoming EasyNote XS from Packard Bell, one of the leading PC brands in the European market.

“The EasyNote XS is a ground breaking new device that combines the functionality of a PC with the convenience of a handheld,” commented Roger Yuen, Asia Pacific Vice President of Packard Bell. “We are very excited about the potential of this new category of Ultra Mobile Devices in the market.”

VIA NanoBook UMD Reference Design

Weighing less than 850g and measuring just 230mm x 171mm x 29.4mm, the VIA NanoBook UMD Reference Design makes all day mobile productivity and entertainment a reality with up to 5 hours of battery life.

Powered by the 1.2GHz VIA C7-M ULV processor and the VIA VX700 chipset featuring the VIA UniChrome Pro II IGP integrated graphics core, the VIA NanoBook delivers all the performance and functionality for a rich Windows and Internet experience. Despite its small size, it also comes with a complete set of productivity, multimedia, and connectivity features, including a full keyboard, a 7″ WVGA screen with touch panel supporting 840×480 resolution, up to 1GB DDR2 SDRAM, a 30/60GB HDD, and a 4-in-1 card reader, as well as 802.11g WiFi and Bluetooth support, plus an Ethernet, a DVI and two USB2.0 ports plus Mic-In/Speaker-Out ports. The device supports Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Vista.

To further extend the device’s functionality, the VIA NanoBook is also equipped with a USB slot next to the screen that can be configured to include a World Time Clock, GPS, DVB, VoIP or even 3G/CDMA wireless broadband modules. The standard model has a smart silver finish, though greater personalization is possible with a variety of shell colour options.

Targeted at aggressive consumer price points, the VIA NanoBook is ideally suited to the consumer, business and education markets and versions of it will be available through leading global OEMs and SIs in the second half of 2007. Today Palm introduced the Foleo ($499 after $100 rebate) new calling style of computing called a “Smartphone companion product,” It has a 10-inch screen, full-size keyboard and built-in wi-fi, and bluetooh connectivity, however it does lack any sort or cellular antenna such as EVDO. This puts the Foleo into a very interesting position between the UMPC and compact laptop markets. Foleo runs on an open Linux-based platform and is has a business style platform of software such as editors for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, plus a PDF viewer but also includes a Opera browser and an email app. However the real surprise is the lack support for the new device, a great deal of people can’t identify what the target is for this product. The Foleo is clearly a laptop designed to take form meeting to meeting to take notes and connect to the office’s wireless network. In addition to the office this type of product would be ideal for students everywhere. This light weight laptop can easily be moved from class to class with ease due to its light weight and its five hour battery life ensures that it will last for a long time. This is an interesting new product form Palm and i hope to see more styles of the Foleo in the future.

Foleo Mobile Companion Brings Large Screen and Full-size Keyboard to Smartphones

CARLSBAD, Calif., May 30, 2007 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Building on its vision that the future of personal computing is mobile computing, Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) today announced the Palm(R) Foleo(TM), its first smartphone companion product. The Foleo mobile companion has a large screen and full-size keyboard with which to view and edit email and office documents residing on a smartphone. Edits made on Foleo automatically are reflected on its paired smartphone and vice versa. Foleo and its paired smartphone stay synchronized throughout the day or at the touch of a button. This powerful combination is for productivity-minded business people who want a more complete mobile solution for email, attachments and access to the web.(1)

The Foleo mobile companion turns on and off instantly and features fast navigation, a compact and elegant design, and a battery that lasts up to 5 hours of use. Its applications include email, full-screen web browser, and editors or viewers for common business documents such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files. The Foleo stays synchronized via Bluetooth(R) wireless technology and uses the smartphone’s radio or the Foleo’s built-in Wi-Fi radio for general Internet connectivity.

“Foleo is the most exciting product I have ever worked on,” said Jeff Hawkins, founder of Palm, Inc. and the visionary behind the Foleo’s concept and definition. “Smartphones will be the most prevalent personal computers on the planet, ultimately able to do everything that desktop computers can do. However, there are times when people need a large screen and full-size keyboard. As smartphones get smaller, this need increases. The Foleo completes the picture, creating a mobile-computing system that sets a new standard in simplicity.”

(NOTE TO EDITORS: Credentialed media plus industry and financial analysts are invited to join a streamed webcast today at 11:30 a.m. Pacific. Hawkins will discuss Palm’s vision for this new category and demonstrate the new product’s capabilities, followed by a Q&A session. The live webcast can be accessed using the following link: http://www.visualwebcaster.com/event.asp?id=39613)

Foleo mobile companions work with Palm’s Treo(TM) smartphones (Palm OS(R) and Windows Mobile(R) versions). However, Palm believes that most smartphones based on Windows Mobile should work with little or no modification. Smartphones based on operating systems from Research in Motion, Apple, and Symbian likely can be supported with a modest software effort. The Foleo’s synchronization architecture is open, and Palm expects to work with third-party developers to support as many smartphones as possible.

“As we did with the PalmPilot more than a decade ago, and more recently with the Treo smartphone, Palm is driving innovation and capitalizing on emerging opportunities in mobile computing, a market full of potential,” said Ed Colligan, president and chief executive officer of Palm, Inc. “The Palm Foleo represents our first product in a new line of solutions that will redefine how people work while away from their desks. It starts today with a focus on wireless email, and we expect the Foleo to grow in features and expand its capabilities as the platform grows.”

Skyrocketing use of mobile email creates demand for a new way of mobile computing. By the end of 2007, an estimated 24.2 million wireless email accounts will be in use worldwide, and by 2010 wireless email accounts will soar to 199 million.(2) The rapid growth of smartphone sales, the faster speeds of wireless networks, and the increasing digitization of content make this the right time for the introduction of Palm’s first mobile companion product.

Although designed primarily as a companion to a mobile phone, Foleo is a powerful computer on its own. Its Linux-based operating system and built-in Wi-Fi radio make it easy for developers to create new applications that can be installed with a single click in the browser. The Foleo has a USB port, video-out port, headphone jack, and slots for SD and compact flash cards for memory expansion. This combination of capabilities in a low-cost design is new in the industry. Palm has opened its design and is actively supporting third-party software developers.

(NOTE: Video and images of the new mobile companion are available from Business Wire (http://www.businesswire.com/cgi-bin/mmg.cgi?eid=5410999) and from Palm’s Multimedia Library (www.palm.com/MultimediaLibrary).)

Primary Capabilities and Attributes of the Foleo Mobile Companion

– One-button access to full-screen email

– Instant on, instant off

– Rapid access to various applications

– 10-inch screen and full-size keyboard

– Web search and browsing via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi

– Editors for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, plus a PDF viewer

– Compact, stylish design that fits on an airline tray table

– Lightweight at 2.5 pounds

– Fast, simple and intuitive navigation

– 5-hour battery life

– Linux OS for easy application development

Wireless Email on the Big Screen

Email users have become increasingly dependent on smartphones to remain connected and productive.

Drawing on Palm’s world-class usability and responsiveness, the Foleo mobile companion gives Palm OS and Windows Mobile based smartphone customers more power and flexibility while retaining the most-loved features of the Treo smartphone. For example, customers open the Foleo, press a button, and it turns on instantly. There is never a delay or boot-up time. A dedicated button provides access to email. All work is saved, so there is no need to close applications or take actions in order to save files. When the Foleo is turned on again, it resumes where the user left off.

New users follow a simple process to pair a Foleo with their smartphone. From then on, email stays synchronized on both devices.

Web Browsing

It is easy to view the web through built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios, using the Opera browser. Using Bluetooth, a Treo smartphone acts as a wireless modem for the Foleo. Alternatively, customers can use the Foleo mobile companion’s built-in Wi-Fi for fast web browsing anywhere Wi-Fi is available, including more than 50,000 hot spots open to the public in the United States.(3)

Attachments To Go

The Foleo mobile companion also supports the most popular types of attachments. As on the Treo smartphone, the mobile companion uses a version of Documents To Go(R) customized by DataViz(R). People can create and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint compatible documents. The Foleo also includes a Palm-developed PDF reader.

Mobile professionals will find that just as their smartphones are ideal for use while on the move, the Foleo mobile companion is a perfect fit for use while commuting by mass transit, in meetings or on business trips. The mobile companion’s size is ideal for working from an airplane seat, and its instant on/off capability makes it easy to comply with flight restrictions on electronics.

Elegant and Thoughtful Design

The Foleo mobile companion’s hardware design features elegantly clean lines and forgoes excessive latches and connectors. An innovative scroll wheel, clever forward and back buttons, and a convenient track point enable easy navigation without requiring the user’s hands leave the full-size keyboard.

By building the Foleo on an open Linux-based software platform, Palm hopes to replicate earlier success with developers by drawing a large community to create new applications that will extend the mobile companion’s capabilities. Palm already has partnered with DataViz and Opera Software, demonstrating the ease with which exciting technology and applications can be ported to the Foleo mobile companion. Palm also will produce tools to allow smartphone manufacturers to make devices compatible with the Foleo mobile companion.

Foleo Pricing and Availability

U.S. availability for the Palm Foleo mobile companion will begin this summer. The price of the Foleo mobile companion is expected to be $499 after an introductory $100 rebate. For more information on the Foleo mobile companion, please visit www.palm.com/seefoleo. To sign up for notification about Foleo availability, please visit www.palm.com/foleonotify.

Pretty impressive, but is it better than the Sony Viao UX?

Thank you Samsung. Pictured above is a Q1 and Q30 with 32GB of memory!!! These PCs are scheduled for JUNE in Korea ONLY ! The drawback is the price which will be around over $2,400.00 USD for a Q1. In case your not in the know about what a Solid State Drive is, it is flash data storage that is going to make the next generation computers super fast by eliminating time it takes for hard disks to read data.

Samsung Electronics Launches the World’s
First PCs with NAND Flash-based Solid State Disk

SEOUL, Korea – May 23, 2006: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the leader in digital media technology, will release the world’s first PCs embedded with a 32-Gigabyte (GB) NAND flash-based solid state disk (SSD). This marks the first time that NAND flash has moved into a commercial mobile computing application and is a breakthrough that will pave the way for replacing hard disk drives with NAND flash-based memory disks.

The Samsung Q1, an ultra-mobile computing device and the Q30, a 12.1-inch screen notebook PC, will be available in the Korean market from early June.

The two new SSD-enabled PC offerings are designed for optimal portability and resolve many of the traditional challenges of mobile computers. The data in flash memory are much more secure against external shocks that can occur when transporting a mobile computer. The SSD can withstand about twice the impact that would cripple a regular hard disk drive. In addition, stored data can be more easily retrieved from flash memory than traditional hard drives when PCs are dropped or liquid is spilled on the device. These mobile computing devices are the ideal solution for professionals and executives who are constantly on the move.

The SSD reads 300 percent faster (53MB/s) and writes 150 percent quicker (28MB/s) than normal hard drives. As a result, multiple application programs can operate simultaneously and large volumes of data can be edited and reproduced more efficiently. The Microsoft Windows XP operating system will boot up 25-50% faster on the SSD than on other drives—good news for those in a hurry. Moreover, the typical 1.8-inch hard disk drive weighs around 50 grams; whereas the SSD is 20 to 30 grams lighter, depending on the package type.

The typical notebook PC will generate around 30dB of operating noise, while the Q30-SSD will operate in complete silence. This is an unprecedented feature for people who want to use their PC in a library or other places where noise is not allowed.

The Q1-SSD will show video or still photos as well as play audio without having to be booted up first. This “instant on” feature provides access to multimedia content such as digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) TV at least 30% faster than with a portable multimedia player (PMP). DMB TV receivers are embedded in both PCs, which will bring extra enjoyment to users during this summer’s World Cup competition. “PC models based on solid state disks have numerous advantages over traditional hard disk-based models. These include faster booting, greater durability, quieter operation, and increased battery life. The new Q30-SSD and Q1-SSD models are only the beginning. Samsung will continue to lead the market, introducing new portable PC models that bring these benefits to both consumers and enterprise users.” said Kim Hounsoo, Executive Vice President of the Computing Division of Samsung Electronics.
