Bitmicro has created a 461GB Solid State Disk Drive. The E-Disk Altima flash drives are standard 2.5-inch Serial ATA (SATA), and are engineered to be very reliable. They can operate in temperatures of -40 to +85 degrees Celsius, and withstand substantial shock. Based on current flash memory prices, these things are going to be pretty pricey and will be built specifically for industrial and military applications. The 461GB Bitmicro E-Disk Altima is said to be available March of 2008. [via] Read more specs.

Well just the other day Palm announced the interesting Foleo ultra-portable laptop and now it seems that other company’s are starting to unveil more laptops based on this new style of computing. Today VIA introduced the NanoBook Ultra Mobile Device and to be honest this editor was excited to use Palm’s new Foleo but now i cant wait to get my hands on one of VIA’s new Ultra Mobile Device. The NanoBook simply adds a significant amount of hardware to the device and allows for a much broader range of uses as opposed to the Foleo’s strictly business approach. The NanoBook runs on either Windows XP or Vista (I’ll believe it runs Vista when i see it), weighing in at just under two pounds it features a 1.2GHz VIA C7-M processor with up to 1GB of RAM Also included is a 30GB hard drive, 7-inch WVGA display, 802.11g WiFi , Bluetooth, and a DVI-out port and even comes in at a price of $600. Along side the 7-inch screen is a secondary slot to add the function of GPS, VoIP, or even WWAN which grealy increases the capabilities of this tiny laptop as opposed to the non-upgradeable Palm Foleo. Currently this is only a reference design but with Packard Bell and another unknown company already signed on, the prospects of bringing his incredibly versatile laptop to the US market seems to be fairly good.

New Palm Foleo

May 31, 2007

foleo_back_halfopen_r_jpg.jpg
Today Palm introduced the Foleo ($499 after $100 rebate) new calling style of computing called a “Smartphone companion product,” It has a 10-inch screen, full-size keyboard and built-in wi-fi, and bluetooh connectivity, however it does lack any sort or cellular antenna such as EVDO. This puts the Foleo into a very interesting position between the UMPC and compact laptop markets. Foleo runs on an open Linux-based platform and is has a business style platform of software such as editors for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, plus a PDF viewer but also includes a Opera browser and an email app. However the real surprise is the lack support for the new device, a great deal of people can’t identify what the target is for this product. The Foleo is clearly a laptop designed to take form meeting to meeting to take notes and connect to the office’s wireless network. In addition to the office this type of product would be ideal for students everywhere. This light weight laptop can easily be moved from class to class with ease due to its light weight and its five hour battery life ensures that it will last for a long time. This is an interesting new product form Palm and i hope to see more styles of the Foleo in the future. Read the rest of this entry »
